Le Marché (The Public Market)

Le Marché in downtown Papeete is the heart of Papeete and the place the locals shop.  Here Tahitian-made arts and crafts, oils, soaps, food, woven articles and flowers abound.  We spent the morning at the marché shopping and Didi introduced us to the
wonderful casse croutes which you can buy on the first floor.

In the Marche, you can shop till you drop!  Left: " Miz Parker"  found a beautiful pareo.  Right:  Connie displays her great find while Stevie looks on.  Bottom left:  Sandy and Beth look over some of the goodies and bottom right:  Becky selects a pareo.

In the market on the second floor, we discovered Teiva who creates wonderful jewelry and carvings.  Chris bought one of his necklaces and Kitty bought one of his carved black pearls.

Beth looks on as Connie models one of the tahitian beach coverups on the second floor of the marche.   In front of Connie are some of the Tahitian tapa drawings.

Didi and Heinui took us to their cousin's kiosk on the first floor of the Marche where we were introduced to a Tahitian staple - the casse croute.  Left:  A casse croute - a baguette filled with ham and cheese or other meats.  It is delicious and inexpensive!
