One of the things that strikes you when you visit Tasmania is how alive and well their Georgian colonial history is.   A short drive from Hobart is the village of Richmond, located in the Coal River Valley, home to over 30 vineyards.

Richmond is a village of cobblestone streets, sandstone cottages and manors and is the best preserved Georgian village in Australia.

The village has Australia's oldest preserved colonial convict gaol, oldest bridge, oldest Catholic church, primary school and post office.  These historic buildings, beautifully preserved, are now village shops and galleries, restaurants, tea rooms, B&B's and other accommodations.

The award-winning Old Hobart Town model village (left) shows you what life was like in Hobart during the 1800's.   The village has sixty odd buildings but  also has some 400 period figurines which tell the story of life in colonial Tasmania.
