The Tiwis lived separately from the mainland and because of this developed an art-form that is totally different from the aboriginal art you will find elsewhere in Australia.   In the town of Nguiu, there are workshops plus their art decorates everything.

You fly into Nguiu, Bathurst Island Airport (BRT) and Tiwi art is everywhere! Far left - the airport terminal.  Middle - the bathrooms.

They make wonderful sculptures of bird plus replicas of the pukamani burial poles.

The Tiwis are world-famous for their batik and silk screening.

There are several workshops on the island.  We visited the Ngaruwanajirri workshop.

The ceilings of the workshop.

On the outside it looks like just any other church but inside it is decorated Tiwi-style!
