Not only can you stay in Cairns, but you can stay in Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach or Palm Cove.  That's where the white sand beaches are located.  They are about 20 mins. from Cairns.

Where the Rainforest Meets the Reef

Cairns (pronounced "cans"), on the northeast coast of Queensland, is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, Port Douglas, the World Heritage Daintree Rainforest, Cape Tribulation and the Outback.  Cairns is a great base from which to explore the above areas, the islands & cays, and other surrounding spots of interest. 120,000 people live in Cairns.

Life in Cairns centers around the harbour and Trinity Wharf.  This is the departure point for visits to the Great Barrer Reef.

Cairns Regional Gallery

The Esplanade (above) was once a mudflat and now has an outdoor amphitheater, swimming lagoon, picnic areas, BBQ's, shops and restaurants and the Esplanade Cruise Terminal. There is an Esplanade Market every Saturday from 8-4.

Cairns Night Markets start at 5 p.m. and have  over 70 vendors.  A "must do" while you are in Cairns.

The Cairns Zoo is one place where you can cuddle a koala.
