POMPEII

Mount Vesuvius erupted August 24,  79AD and covered the Roman town of Pompeii which is 15 miles south of Naples and 147 miles southeast of Rome.   The town of 10,000 people  was covered by 16 feet of ash.   In 1748 evacuations began of Pompeii and today you can visit the town and see the devastation of the eruption.
