Among the things you can do when you visit Kakadu National Park are take a cruise to spot crocodiles, hike to billabongs, visit aboriginal rock sites and cultural centers which teach you about Australia's first people, the aboriginals.  Below are some photos taken in 2005 of amazing Kakadu National Park.

The Yellow Water Billabong is located at the end of Jim Jim Creek, which is a tributary of the South Alligator River.  Yellow Water Cruises gives you an opportunity to visit this wetland, seeing birds and crocodiles in their natural habitat.

UBIRR & NOURLANGIE ROCK ART SITES

There are many art sites throughout Kakadu, but the aboriginal owners of the land only allow access to three of them.  On our guided tour we visited  Nourlangie and  Ubirr Rock sites. Our guide taught us the different art styles and how the rock art could be dated by the type of the drawing and told us what it meant.  Only the men were allowed to paint and since the aboriginals are a nomadic people, these paintings were left behind to tell the next group that came along what they could do in this area.  Paintings were also used to tell a story or to
teach lessons to the children.

A good guide is essential to learn about the rock art.  This is Barry from Aussie Adventure s. Here are examples of rock art.

The ground and this earth
like brother and mother

We like this earth to stay,
because he was staying forever and ever.

We don't want to lose him  We say 'sacred, leave him.'

Another must see in the park is the Warrandjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre. The centre tells the story of the Bininj/Mungguy, the traditional land owners of Kakadu, and relates the story of the Creation Time or Dreamtime.  The gallery was created by the aborginals from the clans of Murumburr, Mirrar Gun-djeihmi, Badmardi, Bunitj, Girrimbitjba, Manilakarr, and Wargol.  Below right is a seasonal chart of Kakadu.

Located at the Bowali Visitor Centre is the Marrawuddi Gallery.
