Chartered in 1839, Galveston Island, with a population of 60,000, is located on the upper Texas coast of the Gulf of Mexico, and was the principal port into the southwest during the 19th century. This coastal town has
experienced a recent revitalization, making it one of America's newest beach resorts. It has four distinct historic districts with approximately 1,500 historic buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Besides
historic homes and districts, Galveston also has boat rides and cruises, carriage rides, gardens, 14 museums, sightseeing trains, and trolley rides.
