The Basic Plan:
Start with bottoms. Choose one casual pair of pants and or skirt, and also a dressier pair of pants and/or skirt. Then pack a variety of tops in different colors, styles and fabrics to
create the variety you'll need. Another reason for this: tops are lighter and pack smaller than bottoms.
Pack your lightest weight and least bulky clothing (including shoes), wear the bulkiest items (ie: blazer/jacket/hiking boots) on route.
Pack only clothes that are comfortable and that you'll enjoy wearing frequently.
Before you pack:
Lay out the clothes you propose to pack, then determine how many different outfits you can create.
Remember to consider changes in weather and to include items for both indoor and outdoor pursuits.
Consider clothes that start off as smart casual wear for daytime use but can be dressed up with a tie, costume jewelry or a scarf for an evening occasion.
Create ways to make dressy outfits look more casual. For lunch on the patio, an elegant evening skirt sans tie or jewelry can look great with khakis simply by rolling up the sleeves.
The best items to pack will meet the following criteria:
Natural color for your basic bottoms.
A sports jacket or blazer that looks good with dressy and casual shirts and pants/skirts.
A shirt that can be worn on its own, or put on jacket-style over another top.
Pants that zip into shorts
Comfortable clothes that dry quickly and are wrinkle resistant.
Clothes with security features (think Velcro-sealed pockets, zippered pockets, stop-loss pockets and secret pockets).
