Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park is located in Montana and Canada. Glacier National Park was made a Forest Preserve in 1900 and in 1910 President Taft signed a bill establishing Glacier as the country's 10th national park. Most visitor facilities are open from late May to mid-September. Most people fly into either Glacier Park International Airport in Kalispell, Montana (25 miles from West Glacier) or Great Falls, Montana (200 miles from West Glacier). The main road, the Going-to-the Sun Road, over Logan Pass was completed in 1932 after 11 years of work. The road opened up parts of Glacier to the motoring public and is considered an engineering feat and is a National Historic Landmark and is one of the most scenic roads in the United States. Just across the border, in Canada, is Waterton Lakes National Park and in 1932 the two parks were designated as the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. Both parks are biosphere reserves and were named as a World Heritage Site in 1995. Matthew, Rachael, Giles and Jeff backpacked in Glacier in May 2001 and here are some of their photos. |
