Daytrips from London

While in London, Fred and Joyce took several daytrips.   They visited Dover, Kent, Canterbury, Oxford, Bath and Stonehenge.

Our church/cathedral/duomo rating system puts the Canterbury Cathedral at number 2, just behind San Lorenzo in Florence.  This was built in the 1100s without modern technology and probably predates San Lorenzo by at least 200 years.   They didn't have Michelangelo's help either.  The stained glass was the best we've seen. During our visit the choir was practicing, no microphones or speakers, just incredible acoustics.

Leeds Castle in Kent dates back to the 9th century.  It is a small and charming medieval castle built on two small islands in a lake. The castle is surrounded by magnificent gardens and a golf course. The man-made lake serves two purposes - defense and water power.

Canterbury has a large pedestrian-only area with lots of shops and restaurants. This canal just popped out of nowhere when we were walking down the street.

Bath is a pretty university town nestled between two substantial hills. The baths are okay but not great (nice restrooms though). The pedestrian-only shopping area was nice.  The cathedral has a gorgeous stained glass window.

We took a daytrip to Stonehenge and Bath.  Stonehenge is truly strange. It is in the middle of a sheep pasture in what Pennysylvanians would call the boondocks.  It is not apparent why this place was chosen (it's not the top of a hill or doesn't relate to any obvious geological feature). The stones were quarried 300 miles away so there must have been a good reason.  You hear the obligatory story of the sun rising on the longest day of the year and bisecting this or that stone.  I suppose it's true but the Druids took the real reason with them.
