Tifaifai Workshop

Thursday, February 7th:  The group collected plants and designed their Tifaifai patterns based on what they had collected and what they had experienced on the tour.  Once they designed their patterns, they basted their pattern onto a piece of material and then cut out the pattern. The cloth pattern was then basted onto another piece of material.  Around noon, the group took a break and went swimming with the rays on a private motu and then returned later on that afternoon and worked into the evening.  Only in Tahiti!   On Friday, they spent another 1/2 day in a workshop while Didi taught her special applique technique. The Tifaifai is used as a covering for a bed and the Tahitians do not have a word that translates to quilts.

All week long Didi had been showing the group plants that would become their patterns for their tifaifais.

The Tifaifai exhibit in the Salon Tepee on the day of the quilt workshop.  Employees and  guests of the hotel enjoyed seeing the wonderful Tifaifais that were brought over by Didi and enjoyed watching our group work on their Tifaifais.

Judy had never quilted before in her life and here is her Tifaifai.

Among other plants, Gloria's Tifaifai included the breadfruit.
