Insider's Tour of Tahiti February 2002

The second "Insider's Tour to Tahiti" is now history.  Twelve people met in Los Angeles on February lst, 2002 and flew to Tahiti on Air Tahiti Nui on February 2nd. The group returned on February 10th. Leading the group was Dierdra McElroy, a well-known quilter who specializes in the tifaifai, the Tahitian quilt. The group learned from Didi all about her life in Tahiti and they were able to see a side of Tahiti that tourists rarely see.  Below and on the pages to follow is a photo journal of their Tahitian adventure - 9 days in Paradise!  Beaucoup thanks to Christian, Debbie and Cheryl for contributing photos to this presentation.

Friday, February 1, 2002 - The group consisted of people from all over the United States plus a couple from France.   We all met in Los Angeles and went to The Proud Bird by LAX airport for a get-acquainted dinner on Friday evening.   The restaurant was founded by David Tallichet, a World War II veteran and aircraft collector and  has been a historical landmark for decades and is the 8th largest private aviation museum in the world. Originally named for its relationship with Continental Airlines, "The Proud Bird with the Golden Tail," the restaurant has been an international destination for more than 35 years. The restaurant is home to an extensive museum of aviation history. Hundreds of artifacts, photographs, and memories fill the restaurant, telling the story of the evolution of modern aviation. Cheryl found her father in one of the pictures hanging on the wall in the section devoted the Tuskegee Airmen!  

Saturday, February 2 - waiting to board Air Tahiti Nui at LAX

After a flight of  8 hours on Air Tahiti Nui, the group checked into the Tahiti Beachcomber InterContinental.

After getting settled in their rooms, the group met again and Didi showed the group how to tie the pareos that she had given to them the night before.  A pareo is the Tahitian version of a sarong.
