THE HISTORY OF CUNARD'S RMS QUEEN MARY

Keel was laid on December 1, 1930.
Launched on September 26, 1934.
May 25, 1936 - Queen Mary presents her personal standard to the ship.
Now it is located on board the Queen Elizabeth 2.
Maiden Voyage was May 27, 1936.
War Service - March 1940 - 1946. Carried a total of 765,429 military personnel,
12,886 G.I. brides and transported Winston Churchill three times to conferences.
Resumed commercial sailings on July 31, 1947.
Retired from service September 19, 1967 (after completing 1,001 crossings of the Atlantic).
Arrived in Long Beach, December 11, 1967.
Became the Queen Mary Hotel on November 2, 1972 and reopened to the public.

These display cases emphasize the special events that the Queen Mary can host - special dinners, group functions and weddings. The ship has 16 art-deco reception salons and a wedding chapel.

Inside the Queen Mary the halls, floors, shops and cabins are adorned with the original wood. Above and far right: the shops in the lobby on the Promenade Deck.

Above is a photo of the Promenade Cafe and below is a photo of Sir Winston's. which is Queen Mary's gourmet restaurant. Other eating and drinking places on board the ship are the Chelsea, Observatory Bar and the Sun Deck Deli. They also host a Sunday champagne brunch.

Many celebrities sailed on the Queen Mary. Above, a photo of Fred Astaire taken in the same place on the ship where he stood. Photos of important people decorate the walls throughout the ship.

Below are photos of some of the staterooms and suites onboard the Queen Mary. The ship has 365 staterooms, and much of the furnishings are original and date back to the 1930's.
