HISTORIC AUSTRALIA

With centuries old rainforest, ancient and sacred culture and a land settled by convicts.  From mining, to the Gold Rush, Aboriginal history and rights through to our convict past, Australia, even though young, has an interesting and checkered past. In Broken Hill the earliest known inhabitants of the area were the Willyama Aborigines before the town was taken over for mining development.  Tasmania's Port Arthur was established in 1830 by Lieutenant-Governor Arthur (after whom it was named) to deal with secondary criminals. This magnificently preserved penal colony is a powerful reminder of  Australia's early history. Charters Towers in Queensland is a superb historic mining town full of gracious buildings and surrounded by numerous unusual and  interesting attractions.  Like Kalgoorlie, Cue and Coolgardie in Western Australia it is a city built from the proceeds of goldmining and, as such, the city fathers (a quixotic band of nouveau riche miners) were determined to flaunt their wealth. Or Cooktown,  the first true European settlement on Australian soil. Today it is an exotic and  distant township with a lazy tropical feel. Visit the Stockman's Hall of Fame in  Longreach. In the Red Centre, you can learn about the missions and how this  affected the indigenous community at Hermannsburg (including Palm Valley and the  Finke Gorge National Park), this mission station was originally established by Lutherans and is now a thriving Aboriginal community. For an insight into the  'golden age' of pearling, visit Broome. During the years before World War 1 403  luggers operated out of Broome. Today Broome is a bustling coastal resort village, with easy access to the Bungle Bungle range, Cape Leveque and more.  Coober Pedy in South Australia is a fascinating opal town where most of the  residents live underground. In 1837 a group of Scottish squatters left Victoria's Geelong for Ballarat, in search of the elusive gold, this historic  and elegant city is a charming place to visit to learn some more about  Australia's history. In Australia, our history will embrace you, and you'll  become a part of our future.
