THE BLUE MOUNTAINS

The Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area is a 90-minute drive outside of Sydney and is a perfect day trip.    It is a place of breathtaking views, rugged tablelands, sheer cliffs, deep inaccessible valleys and wetlands teeming with life.

The Three Sisters is a prominent feature overlooking the Jamison Valley.

Left:  You can take the world's steepest incline railway and then take a gondola car back up.  Above:  Inside the Jenolan Caves which is another popular day trip from Sydney.

Wenthworth Falls which is on the way to the Blue Mountains.

THE HUNTER VALLEY

The Hunter Valley is a 2-hour drive north of Sydney and an excellent area to spend a night or two or go for a long day trip.  The area has more than a hundred wineries and also supports a burgeoning olive industry.  There are also art galleries and antique shops that are worth exploring.

BROKEN HILL

Broken Hill is billed as "The Accessible Outback" and  is the biggest mining town in Australia.  Located in far west New South Wales, the town has a population of 21,000 and has been called a "Living Museum".   In 2006, Broken Hill's last mine, the Pasminco Mine closed.  The town is known for its many historic buildings, its mines and the desert that surrounds the town.

The desolate landscape surrounding Broken Hill has made the town a mecca for artists and film makers.   It was the desert surrounding Broken Hill, the clear blue skies and the magic light that made this area perfect for filming Mad Max 2 and  Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
