Timberline Lodge is located at 6,000 feet on the south side of Mt. Hood in the Mt. Hood National Park. It is located about 60 miles east of Portland, Oregon and is about 12 miles from Government Camp. The lodge was constructed between 1936 and 1937 by WPA workers during the Great Depression. The entire lodge is made out of local stone and timbers and craftsman made the wrought iron, the furniture and did all the carving at the lodge. There is a small museum that outlines the history of the lodge plus a wonderful movie which captures vividly how the lodge was created. It is a National Historic Landmark and people come from all over just to see the lodge. This is a great place to come to from Government Camp to have lunch or dinner or just look around. |
