Eichardt's  Private Hotel is located in downtown Queenstown, New Zealand on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and dates from 1859 when it was built as a woolshed by a William Gilbert Rees. In 1862 gold was discovered on Shotover River and Mr. Rees turned his woolshed into a hotel, which was named Queen's Arm Hotel.

Eichardt's is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World and has just been awarded by Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report, Best New Small Hotel for 2002.

In 1867, William Rees sold the hotel to Albert & Julia Eichardt. The hotel operated until 1970 under many different owners and then became Eichardt's Tavern. The tavern was destroyed by floods in 1999 and was then reinvented as a boutique hotel.

Its 70 rooms have been reduced to just  five luxury suites each with more than 90 sq. ft. and some have views of Lake Wakatipu against the backdrop of The Remarkables mountains.

SPECIAL AWARDS 2002

Best New Small Hotel - Eichardt's

Eichardt's is a luxurious and evocative little jewel box of a hotel in the heart of Queenstown's lively waterfront district. And of all the intimate and stylish properties that opened around the globe this past year, we felt it to be the "Best New Small Hotel" of them all.

Additional comment from Mr Harper's spokesperson:

I reached Mr. Harper and was able to get some tidbits - location, location,  location.  Queenstown has always been a favourite stop for Mr. Harper, yet has never had a high end quality inn/hotel.  It has actually been one of the top places in the world that our readers groused about the lack of an in-town hotel and wanted Mr. Harper to find a great  place!

Secondly, the background and experience of the ownership which took  Wharekauhau from a sheep station to a hotel of international stature.

Finally and most importantly - the hotel. The restored residence is luxurious and exclusive.  Its stylish suites (true suites) have those lavish, sky-lit baths.  The intimate House Bar, concierge services and the cocktail hour are icing on the cake.
