Governor's Mansion

The Governor's Mansion in Sacramento was built in 1877 and has been the home to thirteen of California's chief executives.  It was designated as a State Historical Landmark No 823 in 1968.  The Reagans were the last family to live in the house and it is now a museum operated by the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

Every year the Governor's Mansion in Sacramento has an open house the first two weeks in December and this year it was called "Welcome to Our Mansion Memories 2003".   Musical groups from all over are invited to play and Santa and Mrs. Claus are there to greet the guests as they tour the mansion. Docents are available in every room to talk about the history of the mansion and each of the rooms.   Solano Pandemonium was invited this year to play and will play again at the Mansion next year.  Click on the first picture in each of the albums to see photos of this fun day in Sacramento.

THE MANSION

The Governor's Mansion was built in 1877 for Albert Gallatin, a partner in the Sacramento hardware store of Huntington, & Hopkins. Gallatin hired Uriah Reese to build the house and the architect was Nathaniel Goodell.   In 1887, Gallatin sold the house to Joseph Steffens, a local businessman. The State of California purchased the house from Steffens in 1903 for $32,500. A small wing was added and the total cost rose to $56,000. The Victorian mansion has marble fireplaces from Italy, gold-framed mirrors from France and exquistely handcrafted hinges and doorknobs, all of which are reminders of the Victorian era.   The Mansion is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. Tours start every hour on the hour and there is a small admission fee for Mansion tours.   Click on the first photo above and below to see a slide show.
