The Governor's Mansion was built in 1877 for Albert Gallatin, a partner in the Sacramento hardware store of Huntington, & Hopkins.
Gallatin hired Uriah Reese to build the house and the architect was Nathaniel Goodell. In 1887, Gallatin sold the house to Joseph Steffens, a local businessman. The State of California purchased the house from Steffens in 1903 for $32,500. A small wing was added and the total cost rose to $56,000. The Victorian mansion has marble fireplaces from Italy, gold-framed mirrors from France and exquistely handcrafted hinges and doorknobs, all of which are reminders of the Victorian era. The Mansion is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. Tours start every hour on the hour and there is a small admission fee for Mansion tours.
